Jacob Abbott (November 14, 1803 – October 31, 1879) was a prominent American educator and prolific author, widely recognized for his engaging books for young readers.
Abbott attended Hallowell Academy and Bowdoin College before furthering his studies at Andover Newton Theological School. After teaching at Amherst College, he moved to Boston in 1829, where he established the Mount Vernon School, a secondary school for girls, serving as its first principal.
Throughout his career, Abbott authored 180 books and contributed as coauthor or editor to an additional 31, including the popular "Rollo" series of 28 volumes. He created *The Rollo Code of Morals; or, The Rules of Duty for Children*, a guide for teachers published in 1841, which complemented early titles like *Rollo at Work* and *Rollo at Play*. Through Rollo’s adventures with his knowledgeable Uncle George, Abbott introduced young readers to lessons in ethics, as well as topics in geography, science, and history. His extensive work also included 22 volumes on biographical histories and the *Franconia Stories*, solidifying his legacy in children’s literature and educational writing.
